Kick-off Meeting of E-SCOP Project

On 8 and 9 April Polictecnico di Milano hosted at its campus in Bovisa, a district north of Milan,  a kick-off meeting for the E-SCOP project. This gathering of the E-SCOP project partners set the scene for a productive and energetic Kick-off meeting. E-SCOP is a co-funded European research project made possible by funding from the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.

E-SCOP stands for Embedded systems Service-based Control for Open manufacturing and Process automation.

Project Purpose
The E-SCOP project aims to overcome the current drawbacks at the shop floor control level (i.e. MES and deterministic / real-time control), thus improving the state of the art of the overall production control system architecture. This goal is achieved by introducing an innovative approach based on a combination of 3 different pillars, namely: i) embedded systems, ii) ontology-based knowledge management and iii) service- oriented architecture. The approach is called Open, Knowledge-Driven Manufacturing Execution System (OKD-MES).

The intense one and a half days were spent getting to grips with and discussing the technical details of the work packages that are already running, outlining project management procedures and sharing project tools for effective communication among the consortium. Moreover, the partners welcomed a visit from the E-SCOP Programme Officer at ARTEMIS JU, Mr. Georgi Kuzmanov, who kindly presented the important practical and administrative details of an ARTEMIS project.

Project Consortium
Coordinated by FAST-Lab. at Tampere University of Technology in Finland, E-SCOP comprises a total of 10 partners from 4 different countries; Finland, Czech Republic, Italy and Poland. Balancing the needs, requirements and exploitation of future project results, the consortium consists of top research partners, technology providers and end-users, which will eventually implement the E-SCOP pilots.

E-SCOP was ranked no.1 in the ARTEMIS JU Call of 2012 and addresses the Sub-Programme 4: Embedded Systems for Manufacturing and Process Automation. ARTEMIS JU is an industry-driven PPP (Public Private Partnership) and its R&D projects are co-funded by ARTEMIS JU and Member States.
